WHO PAYS FOR WHAT AT A WEDDING?

In the old days when brides and grooms were both young and living at home, there was quite a strict protocol about who paid for what at a wedding and rarely was there any deviation. Of course this has all changed with couples marrying later in life, marrying multiple times, and living together prior to getting married. Many couples pay for the wedding themselves or share in the expense. However, if both families are going to assume the cost of the wedding, this is how the wedding has been traditionally paid for. Of course these are no longer rules, but guidelines.

Traditionally the bride’s family will pay for:

  • Invitations
  • Transportation for the bridal party
  • Wedding ceremony
  • Wedding reception
  • Bride’s dress and accessories
  • Flowers
  • Music
  • Photography and videography
  • Groom’s ring

Traditionally the groom’s family will pay for:

  • Rehearsal dinner
  • Marriage license and Officiant’s fee
  • Groom’s wedding clothing
  • Bride’s engagement and wedding rings
  • Bride's Bouquet, corsages and boutonnieres
  • Honeymoon travel

Traditionally the wedding attendants pay for:

  • Their own clothing and accessories
  • The bride’s attendants pay for the bridal shower and bachelorette party
  • The groom’s attendants pay for the bachelor party
