GUIDELINES FOR THE WEDDING PROCESSIONAL

Different religious denominations have specific traditions. If you are having a religious ceremony it is advisable to check with a member of your clergy for any rules or requirements which you are obligated to adhere to. Non-denominational ceremonies are not bound by any rules, so you are free to create your own traditions. As a guideline, here is a traditional, frequently used wedding processional:

  1. The mother of the bride is escorted down the aisle and shown to her seat by the brother of the bride or an usher.

  2. The mother of the groom is escorted down the aisle by an usher.

  3. The Officiant enters and waits at the altar after the mothers are seated.

  4. The groom enters and takes his place at the altar.

  5. The best man enters and takes his place at the altar.

  6. The groomsmen escort the bridesmaids down the aisle or enter on their own and take their places.

  7. The bridesmaids are escorted down the aisle by the ushers or proceed down the aisle on their own beginning with the one that will stand farthest away from the bride.

  8. The ring bearer proceeds down the aisle followed by the flower girl.

  9. The maid of honour proceeds down the aisle unescorted.

  10. The bride walks down the aisle escorted by her father. Some brides prefer to be walked down the aisle by both parents or by a brother if the father is deceased.
