Different religious denominations have specific traditions. If you are having a religious ceremony it is advisable to check with a member of your clergy for any rules or requirements which you are obligated to adhere to. Non-denominational ceremonies are not bound by any rules, so you are free to create your own traditions. As a guideline, here is a traditional, frequently used wedding processional:
- The mother of the bride is escorted down the aisle and shown to her seat by the brother of the bride or an usher.
- The mother of the groom is escorted down the aisle by an usher.
- The Officiant enters and waits at the altar after the mothers are seated.
- The groom enters and takes his place at the altar.
- The best man enters and takes his place at the altar.
- The groomsmen escort the bridesmaids down the aisle or enter on their own and take their places.
- The bridesmaids are escorted down the aisle by the ushers or proceed down the aisle on their own beginning with the one that will stand farthest away from the bride.
- The ring bearer proceeds down the aisle followed by the flower girl.
- The maid of honour proceeds down the aisle unescorted.
- The bride walks down the aisle escorted by her father. Some brides prefer to be walked down the aisle by both parents or by a brother if the father is deceased.
