DO YOU KNOW THE RITUAL OF TOASTING AT A WEDDING?

According to legend, the ritual of toasting at a wedding is said to have begun in ancient France. Toast would be placed at the bottom of drinking glasses for the bride and groom, on top of which alcoholic beverages would be poured. Then the drinking contest would begin. The bride and groom would drink as fast as they could because the first person to reach the toast would rule the household.

Of course the bride and groom don’t have drinking contests at weddings anymore; do they? However there is a ritual to toasting at a wedding which we do commonly follow and a few iron clad rules:

  • Keep your toasts short. You may find yourself amusing, especially after a few drinks, but I doubt that many people will.

  • This is not a try-out for a stand-up comedy open mike night. Limit your jokes please.

  • Absolutely no vulgarity.

  • No mother-in-law jokes or comments.

  • Don’t make fun of anyone or say anything to make someone uncomfortable.

The order of toasts:
  1. Following the dinner the Master of Ceremonies introduces the person who will be giving the toast to the bride and they give the toast.

  2. The groom replies with a toast to the bride's parents, his best man, and attendants.

  3. The father of the bride may then toast the bride and groom.

  4. The best man may then toast to the maid-of-honour and the other attendants.

  5. The groom or the Master of Ceremonies may then toast the groom's parents.

  6. The groom’s father may reply with a toast.

  7. Anyone may toast.
